چکیده

Two new tools have been employed to diagnose and actively perturb fluctuations in the edge plasma of the Alcator C-Mod tokamak. A mirror Langmuir probe [1, 2, 3] has been used to characterize edge fluctuations and transport with unprecedented detail. In addition, a new Shoelace antenna [4, 5] provides a direct drive to actively probe these fluctuations at a specific k⊥ (1.5 cm ) within a broad (45-300 kHz) frequency range. Both tools elucidate the physics associated with the Quasi-Coherent Mode (QCM, k⊥ = 1.5 cm , f = 50 − 200 kHz), the edge fluctuation responsible for the increased particle flux which sustains the steady-state, ELM-free Enhanced Dα (EDA) H-mode.

Pedestal Turbulence Dynamics in ELMing and ELM-free H-mode Plasmas

Measurements of long wavelength density fluctuations in the pedestal region of DIII-D plasmas have revealed several important features of edge instabilities during type I edge localized mode (ELMing) and ELMfree discharges. These features, measured with a 2D array of beam emission spectroscopy channels, include: toroidal field and spatial dependence of two distinct frequency bands (50–150 kHz a...

Simulations of edge behavior in a mixed-lipid bilayer: fluctuation analysis.

Coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations of lipid bilayer ribbons consisting of a mixture of lipids of different tail lengths have been performed to gain insight into bicelle mixtures. The line tension of the bilayer edge decreases as the mole fraction of short-chain lipids in the system is increased, dropping below zero between 30% and 35%. The mole fraction of short-chain lipids in the r...

Beam compression experiments using the UCLA/ATF compressor

We review recent experimental results from the BNL ATF using the compressor built by UCLA. The measurements discussed include: first observation of short wavelength coherent edge radiation angular/wavelength spectrum and spectrum, sub-100 fsec pulse-length coherent transition autocorrelation measurements, and longitudinal and transverse phase space distortions. Extension of these measurements, ...

Beam Instability and Microbunching due to Coherent Synchrotron Radiation

A relativistic electron beam moving in a circular orbit in free space can radiate coherently if the wavelength of the synchrotron radiation exceeds the length of the bunch. In accelerators coherent radiation of the bunch is usually suppressed by the screening effect of the conducting walls of the vacuum chamber [1, 2]. The screening effect is weak for short wavelengths, but if the wavelength is...

16b.1 Coherent Particle Scatter in Developing Cumulus Clouds

Two mechanisms important for the interpretation of radar observations of the atmosphere, are: coherent scattering from refractive index fluctuations of the clear-air and incoherent scattering from particles. These scattering mechanisms have very different wavelength dependencies and their contributions to the radar return can be separated by using two radars with different wavelengths. A differ...
